Maybe you have felt that you are currently drowning beneath a sea of stuff? It doesn’t really matter what that “stuff” is . . . perhaps you’re a “hoarder” who likes to hang on to things in case they ever can be found in useful. Perhaps you’re only a disorganized individual who can never find anything once they need it.

Scott Sommerdorf | The Salt Lake Tribune K Kay walks down the path through her living room. A path through a packed room is typical of hoarding behavior. K Kay is a hoarder who is trying to become an advocate for other hoarders. She's done a presentation for Sandy City code enforcement about the mental health issues behind hoarding, and she's trying to set up a support network for local hoarders, Thursday, May 24, 2012.

Perhaps it’s not you in any way but your heart drops in despair each time you take a peek by your teenagers’ bedroom door? May be the floor a sea of dirty clothes and discarded burger wrappers? Are there any dirty football boots underneath the bed or perhaps a melee of bottles, make-up and cotton wool buds all over the dresser . . . mingled along with the ear-necklaces, hair and rings brushes?

Some people find that things get into such a mess that they can’t find their way free from it. They really don’t know where to start, they know that something needs to be done but can’t imagine the best thing to do first.

The trick is not to panic. Everybody . . . well except your OCD friend you never know the exact whereabouts of everything and won’t tolerate a coffee cup out of place (don’t worry, everybody has one of these friends by the way but that doesn’t make them any longer “normal” than you), anyway, most people obtain that sinking feeling from time to time but there is however a solution.

It might be easier than you think to tidy up your life a little, though de-cluttering might sound a little bit drastic and way out of your comfort zone. You might actually find that you don’t must throw anything at all, just keep it in the more orderly fashion.

The secret is to begin with baby steps . . . one step at the same time. If your kitchen table is obviously piled high with mail, school bags, homework, the dry cleaning and laundry which is waiting to be ironed take heart . . . this is a great place to start.

Don’t worry about other things, just clear that table and concentrate on keeping it clear . . . it might be your first clutter free zone. Anybody found dumping stuff onto it should be made well aware of the effects. Imagine simply how much better you’ll feel if you walk into the kitchen and you will find a clear space? Once you’ve managed to maintain and achieve one clutter free zone at your residence, you can focus on extending your time and energy.

Let’s take into account the bedroom for a moment. The pile of shoes under the bed might look unsightly, but what else can you do with them? Well, how about a very cheap and extremely effective shoe organizer for the bottom of your closet. It will not only tidy things up but you’ll actually be able to find some shoes to wear much faster from the mornings, instead of hunting out for your favorite twin.

Makeup is another culprit. If you (or perhaps your daughter) have make-up spread all over the dresser not only will it be difficult to find your best shade of lipstick but everything can easily get dirty and contaminated.

Here’s the blueprint – take a look at somewhere like http://thesalonoutlet.com/ and acquire a cosmetic organizer. They’ve got loads of various sorts which all have the same end purpose under consideration . . . keeping your cosmetics (as well as your life) happy, organized and calm. Once you’ve organized just a couple of areas in your life you’ll be amazed at how therapeutic and catching it is.
